Day 1: Getting our bearings

Spent the day wandering around the centro historico and Zocalo (city centre) of Mexico City.

It always takes a bit of time to get used to the rhythm of a place, understanding where you are/what you want to see and do, and how to fit it all in.

Creepy/funky statues in the Museo de Arte Popular.

Having walked 20km around the city, eaten some good food and attempted to speak some Italo-Spanish, I think all of these things are starting to happen. We’ll probably start to feel properly comfortable in Mexico City just around the time when we’re due to move on, next Thursday!

A cool mural of Frieda Kahlo, done by Diego Rivera, in the Palacio de la Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Obras Publicas.

Some rapid first impressions (I’ve never been to Mexico, or Central America):

1. Lots of government employees – street sweepers, police (of many different kinds), traffic wardens etc.

2. Everyone seems fairly chill and lowly-strung, nothing seems hurried.

3. The air is kinda gross in the city, you can see it during certain parts of the day – not amazing for public health.

4. I think I’m going to enjoy the food here a lot!
